Hold the long sounds at least twice as long as the short ones, and don't let the sound change from start to finish.

When two vowels occur together in a work, let the pure quality of each one be heard, one after the other.

You may hear native speakers dropping the vowels i and u ( especially the latter in the work desu as shown here:

I like sukiyaki Watashi wa s''kiyaki go s'ki des ( dropped u's )

He worked in the northern branch office. K'ta no sh'ten de hatarakimash'ta ( droped i's )

Consonants

  • When the "r" appears within a word, pronounce it like the "dd" in the name Eddy

  • When the r appears as the first letter, pronounce it " r "

  • The f is like the "h" at the beginning of the word hoot

  • g is always hard, as in girl and glass

  • The h before i is pronounced like a harsh "sh" as in ship

  • The "ts" is like the sound in let's

  • n followed by a dot ( bon.yari ) is pronounced like the middle sound in singer
